Where to stay could be interpreted in a few ways and this article covers the accommodation side of the equation. So when considering the different options for where to lay your head at night, you need to first figure out whether it’s going to be a short or long term stay. To us a short term stay lasts less than 30 days and a long term stay anywhere from a month to a year.
Short stay apartment rental
Straight off the bat we recommend Airbnb which is a website where you can find apartment rentals around the world from 1 night to a month. You can filter apartments so that they meet your exact requirements right down to the nitty gritty, view reviews from other travelers who have stayed there and they have great customer service should you need it. Airbnb tends to be the first place most nomads go to when booking short term accommodation. Airbnb stays come with insurance too, so if something happens during your stay then you should be covered by their policy. Another alternative to Airbnb is to use Roomorama which works in a similar way.
Hostels can be a good option in last minute or emergency situations and tend to be good value for money. they’re a good way to meet people and you can get your own private room if you’d prefer that. Dont forget though, always lock up your valuables and keep your wits about you when you’re staying in a hostel!
CouchSurfing is a great option for staying somewhere for short to mediums stays and you get to meet people living in the location at the same time. No money exchanges hands, it’s just people living and travelling around the world giving up a bed, sofa or whatever to others. So what do they get out of it? They can do the same thing and stay with a couchsurfer too if they want to. Remember to look after your personal safety and research everything properly before couchsurfing.
For longer stays you could consider house sitting for somebody. It’s usually free and in exchange for looking after pets, plants and generally keeping an eye on the place. This usually works best if you are flexible on timescales and locations. TrustedHouseSitters is the best place to start looking for house sitting opportunities around the world.
Local long term rentals can be found on country specific property search websites, for example in Spain Idealista is reliable. Often you can negotiate short terms contracts for 3-12 months on apartments. Each country has different rules for holiday stays and long term rentals so make sure you know the laws of the country which you are staying in if you have any concerns.
